Herman-Bernhard Ramcke
In 1942, the German Commander's Department devoted most of its resources to the Eastern Front, and did not have time to consider the North African battlefield at Rommel. On the other side of the British army, there was a constant stream of reinforcements, including personnel, ammunition, gasoline, tanks and aircraft. In contrast, the German African Legion was supplemented by only a few light infantry units, the most famous of which was the Ramcke Parachute Brigade, headed by Hermann-Bernhard Ramcke.

The Ramcke Parachute Brigade consisted of four paratroopers' battalions, an artillery battalion, a signal engineer platoon and an anti-tank company. It was this light infantry unit that, during the second Battle of El Alamein, was outflanked by British armored units and lost contact with the main body of the army. Due to the lack of means of transport, the Supreme Command at one point decided that the brigade was in danger of being wiped out.
But even when engulfed in battle on all sides, for the glory of the German soldiers, Brigadier Ramcke did not surrender, but led his heroic paratroopers to successfully break through the British siege. They chose to walk into the hot, hellish desert of North Africa, preparing to walk more than a hundred kilometers to return to the German defense line. Perhaps by God's mercy, the paratroopers successfully captured a British supply convoy, taking not only badly needed trucks but also valuable supplies such as food, wine and cigarettes, which might have belonged to an aristocratic British officer. In addition, the Ramcke Parachute Brigade rescued about a hundred German prisoners of war along the way.

Eventually, some 600 paratroopers managed to join the main forces of the African Army in late November 1942. Ramcke was then recalled to Germany, where he was personally awarded the oak ribbon of the Knight's Cross by Adolf Hitler. On December 21 of the same year, Ramcke was promoted to Lieutenant General.
The new addition to the War Park this month was seven Ramcke Parachute Brigade soldiers. Ship next Monday (July 7).
