The Bloody Micky Maus - T34/76

Xuan Hua Miniatures November 03, 2024 19:28

After more than a year, Xuan Hua finally launches their second ace product as a follow up to the previous Panzer III full-interior tank. Yes, this second full-interior work is the iconic T-34 as some of you had expected.

T-34 has many models, and the most preserved and the most frequent appearance in film and television, is undoubtedly the T-34/85. Although everyone can understand the difference between 76 (76mm tank gun) and 85 (85mm tank gun), it is not difficult for even military enthusiasts without any professional knowledge to distinguish between T-34/76 and T-34/85. The latter has a larger turret. This T-34 with a big head is obviously the much more well-known especially in China because many countries were introduced to it in the modern period and it played an active role in the Korean War. At the same time, the former Warsaw Pact countries still have a large number of them.

Current museum displays are often T-34/85, and even some were turned into weapons on the on the Russian-Ukrainian battlefield.

The T-34/85 is not rare in 1:30 scale models, including several 1:32 movable models by FOV and 1:30 models produced by Figarti (including those with steel wire bed as additional armor against the Panzerfaust). However, in contrast, 1:30 scale finished models of T-34/76 are relatively rare. The only outstanding work is the 1:30 T-34/76 1940 model by First Legion from several years ago. This time, the successor of this model is launched by Xuan Hua, which fills an important gap in the 1:30 range.

To be frank, this is the second piece of work for 1:30 high-precision, full internals, detailed and constructed components, which also fills a gap in the theme for the Allies.

The lone brave man who fights to the death

The most arduous period of the Soviet Patriotic War was the three years from 1941 to 1944. Although in order to show the hardships and bravery of the Soviet army, such as the Battle of Moscow and the Battle of Stalingrad, literature, film and television often portray it from the perspective of infantry to increase contrast and conflict, however, the countless burning wreckages on the battlefield tell us that the biggest contributor was to the Soviet Union's reversal from retreat to stalemate was none other than the T-34/76.

January 1943, German soldiers patrolling Leningrad, passed by the wreckage of two Soviet T-34/76 tanks.

There is this oxymoron of survivor bias. The T-34/76 fought desperately and was in itself consumed in a short period of time. Although the production was huge, its survival rate was not high. Even if it survived or if it was repaired, it would ultimately be replaced with the new three-person turret equipped with an 85mm gun during the later stage of the war. During Victory Day and the ones leftover for the future, all that showed up were T-34/85, so the bloodied hero T-34/76 was buried in the mist of time.

Interestingly, although the T34/76 is far inferior to its successor T-34/85, however, in terms of popularity and actual wartime effectiveness, in the eyes of a considerable number of military enthusiasts, the former is more favored by them. At least from an aesthetic point of view, the 76 is more beautiful. (Of course, the fact that this niche group of people can demonstrate professionalism may be another reason)

When motorized armor appeared and completely replaced cavalry in World War II, the image of cavalry, which had dominated the history of world wars for thousands of years, quickly came to an end. But I don’t know whether it was a coincidence or fate, many tanks in the early days of World War II had the shadow of knights, intentionally or unintentionally. Just like the accurate translation of "rook" in chess should be "Knight", they eventually formed a unity on early tanks. The relatively long chassis of the T34/76, with a front-facing and overall smaller turret, is quite similar to a knight charging with a gun, so whether it is a single-vehicle charge or a group charge (unfortunately, most of them still exist as infantry support), in terms of form and meaning, the complex emotions of loneliness, glory, sadness and loneliness, like the tragic fate of the Nibelungen Ring, knights and tanks have something in common.

From the perspective of configuration, they are undoubtedly quite similar.

Compared with the big-headed T34/85, the 76 is undoubtedly more in line with this feeling in terms of appearance and fate.

Even T-34/76 is not of a single configuration style, it is also divided into many sub-types.

For example, the 1940 T-34/76 produced by the First Legion many years ago as mentioned earlier is the earliest model in the T34 series. It has to be said that from the perspective of appearance alone, the T-34/76 1940 and 1941 models are easily the most proportionately beautiful.

Here is a brief mention of the birth of T-34.

In fact, many friends already know the development history of T-34. Tank performance in the Spanish Civil War made the Soviet Union quite worried about the protection armor of BT tanks. So as early as 1936, the revolutionary inclined armor appeared on the T-32. At the same time, it laid the foundation for another classic feature of T-34-five-wheel tracks. In 1939, Mikhail Ilyich Koshkin hoped to use this tank to replace the BT series with a "universal tank" for mass production. The tilted armored box and diesel V12 engine that are less likely to explode than high-octane gasoline engines on the basis of increased stroke. The first prototype of the improved T-32 was ready that year.

In September 1939, Germany began its blitzkrieg against Poland. Stalin also began to replace the new tank at the same time - further strengthening the armor, replacing it with the L-11 76mm gun, and at the same time, in order to commemorate the Soviet Union's 1934 decree on the large-scale development of armored forces, this new tank has a name that will be passed down to later generations: T-34. The first two pre-production series rolled off the KhPZ factory in Kharkov, Ukraine in early 1940 and underwent 2,000 kilometers of testing. In September of the same year, T-34 began mass production at the Kharkov Tank Factory.

T-34/76 1940 (2nd from right), 1941 (1st from right) and its prototypes T-32 (2nd from left), BT-7 (1st from left)

The T-34/76 turret at that time had an elegant curve, and the L-11 gun did not have the abrupt "pig nose" of the later period, so its appearance score was much higher than that of its successors. But obviously, although the early T-34 shocked the Germans in terms of defense, firepower and mobility, and even caused the famous T-34 crisis, the Soviets' poor coordination and strategic mistakes caused the T-34 to suffer huge losses. As the invasion escalated, the German infantry also improved the situation of being at a loss in the face of the T-34. They began to receive more and more 7.5 cm Pak 40 anti-tank guns, which could penetrate the armor of the T-34 at a long distance. 88mm anti-aircraft guns also arrived in large numbers, which could easily penetrate the T-34 at a long distance. As a result, in 1941, the Soviet Union lost about 2,300 T-34s, which made the need for the T-34/76 improvement modification more urgent.

In the war movie "T-34", the vehicle in which the protagonist died with the enemy at the beginning of the film was a T-34/76 1941 model

The M1938/39 (L-11) 76.2 mm short-barreled tank gun was soon considered to need further upgrades (the initial velocity was too low), and was replaced by the F-34 76.2 mm tank gun (the finalized gun of the 76 model, which also saw the origin of the pig nose).

Experience the magnificent view of the pig nose up close

Even so, the T-34 in 1941 still received a lot of criticism, especially for its welded turret and the inhumane top cover on the turret.

In the early days of the war, the T-34 commander was in a very disadvantageous position in combat; at that time, the T-34/76 had a front-opening hatch and no turret command tower, forcing him to observe the battlefield only through an observation slit and a movable periscope. The four-man crew only had space for two people in the turret, which made the commander also having to do double duty as the loader. The welded turret was not strong, and often caused a large number of casualties due to internal splashing fragments in the shells that might be fatal. The situation was further exacerbated by the huge one-piece turret hatch, which was nicknamed pirozhok (steamed bun) due to its unique shape - it was just too heavy. Even without considering the commander's observation view, in the situation of casualties with the crew, this hatch was more like a fatal coffin lid, sealing the injured crew in this steel tomb.

The early T-34/76's bun hatch

These complaints from frontline officers and soldiers eventually led Alexander Morozov (Koshkin died of pneumonia during the ice and snow driving test in 1940 and did not get to see the T-34 actually equipped) to launch the T34/76 1942 model in August 1942, which is the model produced by this time.

The protagonist of this article, Micky Maus T-34, is the T34/76 1942 model.

It is worth noting that this tank was also called the T-34/76 1943 model in history. Due to some local changes, the description within the Soviet army was not clear.

F34 gun, five road wheels, hexagonal turret and double hatch design constitute the distinctive features of this tank.

Compared with some internal changes, the biggest change in appearance is the change from welded oval arc turret to a new hexagonal cast turret (yes, it became uglier and stronger).

This turret comes from the abandoned T-34M project. At the same time, the bulky bun hatch was changed into two independent hatches. Since observation and ventilation are often needed, these two hatches are often opened vertically.

The usually serious Germans became very humorous this time. They named it "Micky Maus"!

Those two huge ears do look a bit like the real thing!

Of course, this is the most significant change. The T-34/76 1942 model has more improvements. In order to enhance the tank's close combat capability, a Degtyarev tank machine gun was installed on the body. In more aspects, the main purpose of the improved model is not to add but to reduce, simplify the manufacturing process and reduce the cost of parts. For example, the frequently used F-34 gun has been streamlined by about 200 parts (from 861 to 614). In 1941, it took 8,000 man-hours to manufacture a T-34/76 at a cost of 269,500 rubles; in 1942, it only took 3,700 man-hours to produce a T-34/76 1942 model, and the cost was reduced to 193,000 rubles. In addition, almost all adult males were drafted into the front lines, which meant that the main manufacturers of the T-34 had almost no truly experienced skilled workers. The new workers were enrolled from Soviet women and from the elderly, weak or disabled. The huge volume of production led to a decline in craftsmanship, was a helpless but inevitable result. However, it was these unimaginable sufferings that created the tragic epic of the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War.

After the initial shock, the Germans did not think highly of the T-34/76 at this stage. The F-34 tank gun can penetrate 92mm armor at a distance of 500 meters when using APCR ammunition, and the penetration depth reaches 60mm at 1000 meters. It should be noted that in 1941, as the best German tanks, the thickness of the front armor of the Panzer III and Panzer IV did not exceed or 60mm, which means that the hit will inevitably penetrate. But unfortunately, the F-34 sights and rangefinder systems are quite crude, and the ergonomic design is almost non existent. The narrow two-man turret lags far behind their German opponents in both shooting accuracy and shooting speed. The rate of fire per unit time is often only one-third of that of German tanks. When the Germans increased the armor of their Panzer IV tank to 80mm in 1942, the inefficient T-34/76 had to resort to close shooting in exchange for quantity and quality, resulting in a lot of losses.

What the Germans despised even more was the communication and coordination of Soviet tanks. The 1942 T-34/76 model used a 9RS onboard radio with a communication distance of 28 kilometers (only 8 kilometers when moving); even so, it was not until 1944 that the T-34 achieved 100% radio coverage, and before that, the crew could only communicate by flag signals. The experience of the crew and the commander's tactical arrangements became the main reasons for the large-scale consumption of T-34/76.

From the perspective of tank design, the T-34/76 was the top at the time: the attack power of the F-34, the protection brought by the inclined armor and diesel engine, and the powerful mobility given by the V-type 12-cylinder diesel engine, widened tracks and Christie suspension, almost filled the three elements of the tank. But in contrast, the rough sighting system, the crude assembly process and the poor actual combat application caused its failure to achieve the greatest results when facing the constantly upgraded Panzer Type III/IV tanks.

When the Tiger and Panther appeared in Kursk, it was obviously unable to do its best. But even so, the T-34/76 and their crew still exchanged tragic sacrifices for the success of the battle.

That's right, in the Kursk tank battle that you all talk about, the T-34/76 was the protagonist.

"Micky Maus" did not enjoy the elation of the T-34/85's victory and the glory of later generations, nor did it have the calmness and elegance of its predecessor. It was like a wild and selfless warrior, completing its mission with blood and fire, and then disappearing into the dust. But it was this "Micky Maus" that became the key to the Soviet Union's about turn from a major collapse to a stalemate, forcing a turning point, and winning the final battle.

The T34/76 deserves to be remembered.

The slogan means: "Forward for Stalin" and the other is "Hometown"

Let's take a look at the real model brought to us by Xuan Hua.

30th Red Guards Tank Brigade, tank No. 107, Leningrad Front, autumn 1943. (Green paint)

The figure in the picture are by First Legion. The characters are vividly portrayed and beautifully painted. They are a great collectible in the Soviet Army series.

Historic reference of this tank

The above model pictures are for the standard version. The standard version has three hatches that can be opened, two hatches on the turret and the driver's hatch

The following the logo of the "SS" series of Xuan Hua ("SS" means "Super Special"), not the typical SS, haha.

Below are the intricate details of the Super Special version.

Note the two small observation windows protruding above the hatch. I discovered the purpose of this position while looking up information, and tried to make it open, and attached a blue window paint.

Internals consist mostly of sub assembly parts, with very fewer embossed/sculpted surfaces

The color of some parts of the engine is not consistent with the historical color. We will adhere the correct color during the production process of the Super Special.

These openings, from the position of the etched piece and the rear position, in fully opened and closed situations. The pictures cannot fully convey the opening and closing, and the fun of this item can only be perceived from the actual model in hand.

Other in-house fabricated parts for the turret and the bottom of the upper cover.

This time, the "SS" version will come with some random Soviet weapons and equipment as shown above, and the original cover art painting of the Xuan Hua Airbrush Printing

Of course, we will introduce crew and subsequent Soviet vehicle-mounted soldiers, but it will take about a year for these other releases. We are slow but quality is paramount.

This time, we hope the introduction of Xuan Hua’s new product is more complete. Much appreciated of your time in reading.
